Carmel Valley Preserve Home

Leyla Curry April 19, 2021

This client wanted their trellises to look as similar to Solage and the “Healdsburg Home” but without on-site installation. The client ordered maximum density, single weave wattle panels with painted conduit for extra support since the beams were set more than three feet apart. The panels were set into a metal frame, constructed with angle steel, so the edges of the panels would be covered, to look as though the willow was woven on site.

These panels were, also, treated with fire retardant, three months after delivery. Due to the rampant California fire season, these panels had to be treated to comply with fire insurance and county regulations. The panels can only be treated after they’ve dried out for maximum absorption. Fire retardant application is dependent on the local regulations and must be applied by a contractor or professional.

Carneros Winery

The left and center photos are of curly willow fencing with a rolled curly willow top. The height and length of the fence were specified and this fence had to be installed on-site using one-inch thick rebar, curly willow and high-tensile wire. The right photo was constructed the same way however, the top was left natural. This is referred to as a wild top curly willow fence, again with the height and length specified. This fencing is useful when you are trying to achieve a soft, natural barrier that is sturdy, opaque and tall but blends in with the landscape. The curly willow is a great contrast to the sharper lines of a modern home, as well. Both the woven and curly willow panels add a natural and rustic aspect to a home and the different styles allow for varitions in how rustic you need your fence or trellis to be.

Solage Calistoga

Leyla Curry March 21, 2021

Solage has inspired many a project! However, the installation of the project is different than most. On the left are welded frames, similar to the ones sent to us by Solage, into which we woven the willow. These panels were then welded into place to make the trellis. We are about to redo the willow at Solage; all of the work will have to be done on-site as we can, no longer, take the frames down.

These panels are maximum density, single weave, wattle panels installed against an existing fence. Due to the existing structure, no extra support was needed as the panels were attached at each “vertical.” The “verticals” are the vertical pieces of willow, poplar or eucalyptus through which the willow is woven.

Garden Beds

Leyla Curry March 1, 2021

These are maximum density, single weave, wattle panels attached to a redwood garden bed frame with three-inch eucalyptus rods to “finish” the corners. The rods are optional; there are many examples of garden beds that exclude these rods. The way this order was places was: We have four 3’ Wide x 8’ Long garden boxes that are 2’ high. So, (8) 3’ W x 2’ H and (8) 8’ W x 2’ H and 16 2’ H eucalyptus rods were ordered.

Willow Panels: Maximum Density Single Weave Wattle panels with painted steel frames. Powder coated steel frames were sent to The Willow Farm, willow was woven into the frames and send to the site to be installed. The color of the frames was chosen to match the eventual, faded color of the panels and to blend in with the neutral aesthetic of the resort. Steel frames can increase longevity and are easier to replace. However, steel frames are not recommended for on top of an existing trellis.

Willow Hut: 8’ high x 6’ diameter Nest Hut with one 18 diameter window and two 3’ wide x 36” high doors facing each other, window is offset from doors, between them and slightly higher. Hut also has rebar “feet” extended from the frames for easy installation.

Garden Obelisks: 7’ high x 3’ diameter obelisks with two wraps

Trellis: Maximum density, single weave, wattle panels with 1/2” steel tubes laid on top of a painted steel frame. Steel was used as extra support as the distance between each beam was greater than 3-4’. Panels were 5-8 feet High by 25-30 feet Wide. The weave runs in the “Width” direction. The panels were installed with a crane and self tapping screws were drilled through the steel tubes directly into the steel frame.

Rodney Strong Winery

Leyla Curry February 23, 2021

Project information:

Fencing: Maximum density, single weave, wattle panels with 3/4” copper verticals (vertical stems or rods through which the willow is woven). 3/4” copper tubes were installed every 20” as a frame for the willow. Willow was woven on site.

Trellis: Maximum density, single weave, wattle panels with 3/4” copper verticals were built on The Willow Farm and then installed onto a wooden, painted trellis. The copper was used as extra reinforcement as the beams were set farther than 3-4’ apart. The panel dimensions were specified by the Owner and the Archtiect specifically to have an overhang.
